...
I woke up this morning and decided to head to palisades and catch some movies (since I wasn't doing anything anyway for the day
). Of course, I had to decide which movies to watch. My choices were I am Legend, Alvin and the Chipmunks (yeh yeh, i still watch cartoons), AVP II, The Great Debaters, National Treasure 2, Sweeney Todd, and Charlie Wilson's War.
And the winners are
... (drum roll please
)... I am Legend and Charlie Wilson's War.
So I watch I am Legend first. It stars Will Smith as Robert Neville (sounds like a European soccer player) a scientist who is trying to find a cure for the terrible KV virus. The year is 2012 and its been three years since the virus spread and killed 95% of the human population while making some humans be infected and become sorta zombies that kill and eat humans. His defense his immunity to the virus as well as sunlight. He continued living in New York City trying to find the cure to the virus while surviving by scavenging food and send radio transmission looking for survivors. His life took a turn when his dog, samantha, was killed by the infected and he tried to kill himself only to be rescued by Anna and Ethan (both are also immune to the virus) who heard his transmission and was heading to survivor colony in Vermont. He did find a cure for the virus but (skip to the next paragraph if you dont want to know what happen) at the cost of his own life.
I was kinda iffy at first about another movie about humans getting infected by virus and becoming zombie (think Resident Evil) but surely came out satisfied. The story is appealing with the realistic settings and great visual effects. Will Smith's acting is excellent especially in scenes where he had to talk with mannequins or even trying to send his message to the infected ones. Direction was pretty good with flashbacks of the evacuation of New York City not interfering with the story sequence by making them sorta a dream for Neville. The ending was superb that you would have not thought of it ending that way. And the CGI as well as making new york city looked abandoned and forgotten was truly great

.
So after the movie, I decided to stroll around the mall for awhile while I wait for the next showing of Charlie Wilson's War. It was surprised that palisades was packed on Christmas day. I guess everyone decided to head to the mall and catch some flicks as most of the stores were closed. It sure has been a family event during Christmas.
Anyway, so I headed back to the theater and to my amazement, there was a huge line for the tickets. Then I went into the theater and it was almost pack with people. You can surely see the difference between the moviegoers between the two movies. There were mostly young people watching I am Legend while Charlie Wilson's War was watched mainly by older adults.
Charlie Wilson's War stars Tom Hanks (who is my fave actor
) as a Texas congressman Charlie Wilson, a womanizer who loves his scotch, who saw a news about the ongoing Afghanistan-Soviet Union War and got inspired to do something about it. He then got more persuasion from Gust Avrakotos (played by Philip Syemour Hoffman), a CIA agent as well as Joanne Herring (played by Julia Roberts) to send in more support for the Afghan warriors to fight the invading Soviet Union. He succeeded in increasing the budget for the war from 5 million to 500 million while trying to unite middle eastern country to support what he was trying to do.
I must say that I truly like this movie. The story was pretty appealing and portray pretty much what had happen during the 1980s. Tom Hanks versitality as an actor was surely put into used that surely worth his golden globe nomination. Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman acting were superb as well. Even Amy Adams as well as Charlie's angels were great. I was afraid that the movie would be paced slowly but it wasn't and the direction was quite fulfilling yet intriguing in the end. The visuals they used were mostly from news correspondence and the settings were surely truly from the 80s. Truly, the movie is captivating and historically worthy.

So that was my Christmas day. Before I came home, I went to the buffet which I thought closed a long time but actually just moved to another location. Another work day tomorrow.. yep, you heard it.. its a work week for me.
Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas!
