Being alone on Christmas

  • Mood:
  • Music/Movie: Do You Hear What I hear
  • weather:
Christmas is here once more and this is my 3rd year that I'm spending Christmas alone . As most of you know (or probably will know) I moved here almost seven years ago and since then, I haven't had a chance to go back and see my family due to my hectic job schedule and my visa status. And it sure has been a lonely Christmas since then . Actually, this is only my 3rd year of spending Christmas alone since the first four years were spent at my Aunt's place. But its still so different from having your parents and sibling be around during the holiday season .

Oh, and I'm sure that I am not the only one who is spending Christmas alone. I am sure that a lot of families have loved ones in different parts of the country who cannot go home due to work. I guess work has pretty much taken over our lives that we sometimes tend to forget to just drop everything and enjoy this season (Guilty!) . I still remember the times staying till midnight of Christmas eve just to be able to open Christmas presents when the clock strucks 12:00:01. And of course, the festive atmosphere of enjoying a Christmas midnight dinner with the family. Geez, I surely missed those times..

Don't get me wrong, a lot of my friends have invited me over for Christmas but I just don't feel comfortable in a house where everyone is related to each other. I would just feel awkward and would end up just excusing myself to leave early. But it sure nice to hear people's stories on how they all got together to celebrate Christmas which could be the best gift, if not all, for some (I hope its for everyone).

"The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree:  the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other."~ Burton Hillis

And please dont feel sorry for me . I still do enjoy Christmas. Seeing Christmas tress wrapped in ornaments . House decorated with over the top Christmas lights and decors ; And of course, listening and singing Christmas tunes as loud as I can be  (hopefully my neighbors didn't mind )  . This year, I tried to look for organizations needing volunteers to prepare Christmas feast for the needy but to no avail. Oh well, I guess better luck next year.

So please don't take for granted that you are with your family this Christmas. Turn off that HDTV, stop listening to your iPods, turn off your blackberrys and shut down your computers. And just for one night (Christmas Eve) and one day (Christmas), be with your family and enjoy each other's company. Share some laughter with your parents, siblings and other loved ones and make memories and see what you have missed throughtout the year .

To end, I would like to share a quote with you all:

"Isn't it funny that at Christmas something in you gets so lonely for - I don't know what exactly, but it's something that you don't mind so much not having at other times."  ~Kate L. Bosher

May the spirit of Christmas be with you all!! Have a Merry Christmas everyone!!
